Driver Intentionally Hits Bicyclist in Santa Monica

|

An enraged driver intentionally struck a bicyclist in Santa Monica last Thursday, sending the bicyclist to the hospital.

The incident happened at about 6:25 p.m. in the 2600 block of Barnard Way. The driver, Jeffrey Ray Adams of Los Angeles, had argued with the bicyclist as both were traveling southbound on Barnard Way. According to Santa Monica Police Sergeant Robert Almada, the driver then intentionally swerved his car into the bicyclist, knocking the victim to the ground and injuring him.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, and was treated and released.

The driver was arrested and booked for assault with a deadly weapon. He was released after posting a $30,000 bail.

Barnard Way is a designated bike route where the incident happened.

According to Santa Monica Police Investigator Chris Dawson, between January and July of this year, there have been 70 bicycle accidents in Santa Monica.

Last week, the Santa Monica City Council endorsed the draft Bicycle Action Plan, with the goal of increasing bicycle ridership in Santa Monica by creating new bike routes and more distinct bike lanes, and promoting bike safety education for drivers and riders.
