Santa Monica Leads the State in Motorcycle Accidents

|

Have you been injured in a motorcycle accident in Santa Monica? You are not alone. Santa Monica has a heinous track record for motorcycle accidents. When compared to other California cities of similar size, Santa Monica was found to lead the state in motorcycle accidents in 2009. Out of 104 California cities, Santa Monica topped the list for motorcycle accidents.

In addition to bicyclists and pedestrians, motorcyclists are the roadway's most vulnerable users. When a motorcyclist is in an accident, the motorcycle operator is not protected by a vehicle frame, thus motorcyclists are at far greater risk for serious injuries.

Santa Monica is recognizing that it must be proactive in reducing the number of motorcycle-related deaths and injuries. The Santa Monica Police Department will be conducting Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operations on July 2, 2011 and July 3, 2011. Police officers will patrol where motorcycle crashes occur and areas frequented by motorcyclists. Police officers will crack down on traffic violations made by other vehicle drivers that can lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and fatalities, and will crack down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists.

The primary causes of motorcycle accidents include unsafe turning, speeding, and alcohol and drug impairment. Another major factor leading to motorcycle accidents is inexperience.

Vehicle drivers have to be alert and watch out for motorcycles. This is especially true when vehicle drivers are changing lanes and turning.
