Bicyclist Killed in Malibu

|

A bicyclist died in Malibu on Saturday after striking a guardrail. 51-year-old Robert Hyndman, a Laguna Beach resident, was riding his bike on Las Flores Canyon Road near Hume Road. He was riding with a cycling group, including his brother.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 11:45 a.m. As the cyclist was coming around a sharp curve, he veered onto the wrong side of the road and hit a guardrail. He was thrown head-first over his handlebars and his head slammed into the ground, resulting in head injuries. The CHP reports that he was wearing a helmet, but the helmet cracked upon impact with the ground.

According to the CHP, Malibu's Las Flores Canyon Rd. has many sharp curves and is a challenging ride, even for experienced riders. It has many blind curves.

Hyndman was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center where he died.

Friends of Hyndman are organizing a November 13th ride in his honor near the accident site.
