Elderly Driver may have caused Fatal Hit and Run Accident

An elderly driver may have caused Thursday's hit and run accident in Santa Monica which killed a homeless pedestrian. Officers from the Santa Monica police department questioned a 76-year-old man from Los Angeles about the accident that happened at the corner of Lincoln Blvd. and Santa Monica Blvd.

According to Sergeant Richard Lewis of the Santa Monica Police Department, a family member of the 76-year-old driver contacted the police department and told police that the senior may have been the driver of the hit and run car.

After meeting with the suspected hit and run driver, inspecting the damage to the suspect's car, and reviewing witness information which investigators obtained, officers determined that the suspect's car had been involved in the accident. The suspect was released and his vehicle was impounded. According to Sgt. Lewis, the driver is not under arrest at this time.

The elderly driver was ordered by the police department to be re-examined by the DMV to see if he is fit to drive.

The investigation is still ongoing.
