Pedestrian Hit by Car near Santa Monica Place was Lawfully in Crosswalk

Police now report that the pedestrian who was struck by a car on Wednesday about 10:50 a.m. near the Santa Monica Place was lawfully in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. According to the Santa Monica Police Department, the driver who struck the pedestrian ran a red light.

The pedestrian, a female, was crossing Colorado in a marked crosswalk between the Sears building and Santa Monica Place. The driver, a female in her 40's, was eastbound on Colorado when she ran a red light.

The pedestrian remains hospitalized in serious condition.

This location is one of the city's most dangerous intersections for pedestrians, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. It is the same location where an Australian tourist was killed by a drunk driver on August 24th of this year.

The Santa Monica Police Department reported 113 accidents involving pedestrians in 2010. The numbers were similar in 2011. So far this year, pedestrian-related accidents number in the high 80's.
