3-Year-Old Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver

|

A hit-and-run driver killed a 3-year-old and seriously injured the child's mother on Thursday in Anaheim.

The accident happened at about 6 p.m. at a crosswalk at Gilbert Street and Guinada Lane, near Salk Elementary School. The 3-year-old was in a stroller, being pushed by her mother, a 26-year-old Anaheim resident. A hit-and-run driver, traveling northbound on Gilbert, struck the mother and child then fled the scene.

According to police, the car involved was a beige 1995 Nissan Maxima. The driver fled the scene on foot. Police later recovered the car, which had been reported stolen from Stanton. Police found it abandoned at Lullaby Lane and Perdido Street.

Mother and daughter were transported to UCI Medical Center. The girl was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Witnesses believe the driver was a male. According to at least one witness, the driver was speeding before he struck the pedestrians.

Nearby residents say it is a dangerous intersection for pedestrians and that for years they have been trying to get a traffic signal installed at the marked crosswalk. They say that accident after accident occurs at that intersection.
