Pedestrian Violations Focus of Santa Monica PD in February

|

In an effort to reduce traffic accidents, including car accidents, motorcycle accidents, pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents, the Santa Monica Police Department each month is focusing on a different contributing cause of traffic accidents.

In February, the Santa Monica Police Department will be targeting pedestrian violations.

Pedestrian behaviors that can contribute to an accident include:

  • Jaywalking
  • Failure to yield right-of-way to oncoming traffic
  • Walking against a red light or "Don't Walk" symbol
  • Pedestrian in the roadway
  • Distracted pedestrians

Distracted pedestrians as a cause of pedestrian injuries and fatalities is an increasing area of concern. In particular, attention is turning to the problem of pedestrians being distracted by technology, e.g., cell phones and iPods. Pedestrians wearing headphones are at an increased risk of getting hit by a car, truck, motorcycle, bus, bicycle, or train.
