Racing Motorcyclist Dies after Hitting SUV in Santa Monica

A motorcyclist who was racing with another motorcyclist struck an SUV in Santa Monica and later died.

The accident happened on February 24th at 12:20 p.m. Two motorcyclists were westbound on Pico Blvd., traveling at a high rate of speed and splitting traffic. A 41-year-old female was driving a Ford Expedition eastbound on Pico, turning left onto 20th St. The motorcyclists were unable to stop or maneuver around the SUV. One motorcyclist slammed into the rear passenger side of the SUV. The other motorcyclist laid his motorcycle down to avoid striking the vehicle.

The motorcyclist who collided with the Expedition, 22-year-old Frank Gauthier, suffered severe injuries. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead.

Several witnesses gave statements to the Santa Monica Police Department indicating that the motorcyclists were racing.
