Truck hits and kills 92-year-old pedestrian in Hancock Park

|

A 92-year-old woman was hit by a truck Friday in Hancock Park while crossing the street.

The accident happened just before 4 p.m. at the intersection of La Brea Ave. and Third St. Alice Talamantes, an Azusa resident, was northbound on La Brea, crossing Third in a marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was about 10 feet from the curb, when she hit by a right-turning truck. The truck, a 1983 Peterbuilt, was northbound on La Brea, turning right onto Third.

Talamantes was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigating officers.

According to a new government report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, elderly pedestrians face a much higher risk of being killed in a traffic accident than the young do. Although older adults take fewer walks than younger people, elderly pedestrians, when struck, are more likely to die from their injuries.

The CDC found that increasing frailty may leave the elderly more vulnerable to being hit by a car, as well. Age-related declines in mental function, vision and physical disabilities may put senior pedestrians at higher risk for being hit by a car.

The attorneys at McGee, Lerer & Associates, a Santa Monica personal injury law firm, place a particular emphasis on protecting the rights of elderly accident victims. Senior citizens, after spending their lives working and raising a family, should be enjoying their "golden years." A senior's health, mobility, and independence are more precious because the clock is ticking down. When someone's negligence suddenly and unexpectedly causes injury or death that robs a senior of his or her golden years, the negligent person or entity must pay for the damage they have caused.
