1 Killed on Malibu's Dangerous Kanan Dume Rd.

A driver was killed Tuesday in the last afternoon on Kanan Dume Road in Malibu.

The accident happened about 3:54 p.m. about one mile uphill from Pacific Coast Highway in a driving rainstorm. According to Sheriff's Lt. John Lecrivian, a car was speeding when it came around a curve. The driver, 56-year-old Porfirio Lopez, crossed the center divider and slammed head-on into a Southern California Edison truck. Lopez's car then slid off the steep canyon roadway.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene. The Edison driver was not injured.

Lpez was a long time employee of The Reel Inn restaurant on PCH in Malibu. He was on his way to the restaurant to work the night shift when the crash occurred.

Rescuers searched for other possible victims who may have been thrown from the car, but none were found.

At the time of the Kanan Dume Rd. accident, PCH was closed in two locations due to storm-related issues: mudslides and downed power lines. Kanan Dume Road was one of the few open roads for people trying to traverse between Malibu and surrounding areas.

Just ten days ago, a car careened over the side of Kanan Dume Rd. and down the steep embankment, leaving three injured.

Kanan Dume Road is a dangerous highway, especially when excessive speeds and wet road conditions mix.
