Hit-and-Run Big Rig Driver Kills 1 in Fontana

|

A big rig driver in Fontana was involved in a hit-and-run collision which left one driver dead.

The accident happened at about 2:11 a.m. on Thursday. The big rig driver was northbound on Etiwanda. He ran a red light at the intersection of Etiwanda and San Bernardino and slammed into two vehicles which were westbound on San Bernardino. The driver of one of the vehicles was trapped in his car and died at the scene. The other vehicle, an SUV with two male occupants, sustained major damage. One of the occupants was injured and transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The other occupant was treated at the scene of the crash.

Several people witnessed the accident. One witness reported to the CHP that he was northbound on Etiwanda before the accident, and he was run off the road by the big rig driver. Another witness told the CHP that after the crash, he followed the big rig driver and then saw him abandon the truck at Napa St., just north of the intersection, and take off on foot.

After the collision, the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department brought in canine units to track the big rig driver's scent.

According to the CHP, the big rig was marked and unloaded. Officers do not know whether the driver was a hired driver or whether he could have stolen the truck. They also do not know whether the driver was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
