Car Plunges Off Kanan Dume Rd. In Malibu, Injuring 3

A car plunged off the side of Kanan Dume Road in Malibu just after midnight Saturday, leaving three people injured.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the car accident happened about 12:10 a.m. about two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway. A car with three male occupants careened off the roadway, plunging 200 feet down a steep embankment into the canyon below.

According to Sergeant Diane Hecht of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau, the car was virtually destroyed. The three occupants were able to crawl out of the vehicle. Rescue personnel rappelled down to the crash site, loaded the victims into baskets, and hoisted them up the canyon.

All three people were injured, at least one critically.

Kanan Dume Rd. is known as a winding, treacherous and dangerous roadway. It has a reputation as one of the most dangerous roads in California. It is a 13-mile cross-mountain highway which connects San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley to Pacific Coast Highway. Over the years, local residents have rallied, demanding improved safety along the popular route, which they contend was poorly designed and built.

Safety upgrades on Kanan Dume Road over the years have included the placement of warning signs, the construction of passing lanes and installation of guardrails, and the ordering of weight limits.
