Illegal Street Race Kills Innocent Bystander

|

An innocent bystander was killed early Friday morning as the result of an illegal street race in Boyle Heights.

The accident happened about 3:15 a.m. at the intersection of 4th St. and Boyle Ave. Two drivers were racing on the 5 Freeway. One of the driver exited the freeway and the other driver followed. The two vehicles ran a red light. The driver who was behind the first racer slammed into an innocent motorist's car, causing the suspect's vehicle to catch on fire.

The victim of the illegal street race, a female, had to be extricated from her vehicle with the jaws of life. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Two suspects in the speeding vehicle fled the scene of the accident. They were later apprehended. Police are still searching for a third suspect.

Every year, hundreds of people die as a result of illegal street races or drag races. Street races most commonly involve young men, between the ages of 15 and 24. They are often driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Under California law, a participant in an illegal street race can be charged with reckless driving or manslaughter.
