Elderly Bicyclist Hit by Elderly Driver

|

An 81-year-old driver struck and seriously injured a 76-year-old bicyclist on Thursday in Huntington Beach.

The accident happened at about 11:40 a.m. on westbound Heil Ave., west of Goldenwest St. A brown 2006 Ford Explorer collided with the bicyclist. The cyclist and the SUV driver, both male, are residents of Huntington Beach.

The bicyclist was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center. The driver of the Explorer cooperated with investigating officers. He was not injured.

Santa Monica has a large population of elderly drivers. Age-related factors can increase the likelihood that an elderly driver will be involved in an accident, including hearing and vision problems and medication that can impair driving ability.

If you are concerned about an elderly driver's ability to drive, you can report the driver to the California DMV by downloading form DS699 from the DMV's website. You can request to remain anonymous.

If you have been injured in a bicycle accident or struck by an elderly driver, speak with a Santa Monica personal injury attorney at our firm for a free consultation.
