2-Year-Old Dies in Multi-Car Accident on 110 Freeway

|

A two-year-old died in a multi-car accident on the 110 freeway in Highland Park on Friday. The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. on the southbound 110 freeway, just north of York Blvd, when a Nissan Altima collided with a GMC Yukon SUV.

The curving section of this three lane highway is known for frequent accidents. According to nearby resident Tania Sinquimani, "This is like a devil's curve. We see accidents here all the time."

The collision caused the Nissan Altima, carrying a 2-year-old girl and her mother, to burst into flames. Nearby residents rushed to douse the flames with hoses, buckets, and a fire extinguisher. The residents attempted to rescue the girl from the back seat, but were driven back by the flames.

"You just felt helpless looking at that car in flames," said Jair Aguirre, a community college student who lives next to the freeway.

At least four people were injured and transported to Pasadena's Huntington Memorial Hospital, including the girl's mother, the Yukon driver, and two men burned during rescue attempts.
