Santa Monica Attempts to Reduce the Number of Motorcycle Accident Injuries and Deaths

|

As I pointed out in my March 6, 2011 blog entry, Santa Monica has a heinous track record for motorcycle accidents. When compared to other California cities of similar size, Santa Monica was found to lead the state in motorcycle accidents in 2009.

In an effort to reduce the number of motorcycle-related deaths and injuries, on July 2, 2011 and July 3, 2011, the Santa Monica Police Department will conduct Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operations. Officers will be patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur. Officers will be cracking down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists, and on traffic violations made by other vehicle drivers that can lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and fatalities.

Analysis of California collision data reveals that the primary causes of motorcycle-involved accidents include speeding, unsafe turning, and drug and alcohol impairment. Inexperience is another major factor leading to motorcycle accidents.

Motorists must be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.

Motorcyclists are much more vulnerable than others sharing the road. Motorcycle drivers require special skills and abilities to reduce their risk of being involved in a crash.
