Girl, 5, hit by runaway school bus in Moreno Valley

|

A bus hit a five-year-old girl in Moreno Valley Monday at about 2:30 p.m., critically injuring her.

At the time of the accident, the girl was standing on the sidewalk outside of Box Springs Elementary School, waiting to be picked up. A runaway school bus rolled down a hill as its driver was outside the bus, helping a special education student. The bus, occupied by only two children, jumped the sidewalk and struck the 5-year-old victim and pinned her against a guardrail. The school's principal, Sam Stager, and a teacher witnessed the accident and ran over to render aid. They immediately began CPR.

The victim was transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center. She suffered a crushed pelvis, collapsed lung, broken leg and lacerated liver. Doctors had to remove her spleen.

According to the CHP, the school bus will be torn down in order to determine any mechanical problems that may have caused the accident.
