Car Plunges off 118 Freeway in Chatsworth; 2 Killed

|

Two people were killed on early Sunday morning when their car plunged off the 118 Freeway in Chatsworth.

The single car crash happened just after midnight. A 2008 Mercedes Benz was eastbound on the 118 Freeway near the De Soto Ave. offramp at an unknown rate of speed. According to the California Highway Patrol, the male driver of the car made an unsafe turning movement. The car crashed through a freeway guardrail and chain link fence, then rolled approximately 75 feet down a steep embankment into Brown Canyon. The car came to rest on its roof.

When firefighters righted the overturned vehicle, they found two occupants inside the car, the male driver and a female passenger, who were pronounced dead at the scene.

A truck hoisted the totaled car out of the ravine.

Firefighters also found a small white dog, with a collar reading "Harley," outside of the car at the scene. Harley survived the car crash and was reported to be in good condition. The dog was taken to the West Valley Animal Shelter, where it will be held for 30 days, then put up for adoption, if the victims' family does not claim it.

The identity of the two victims has not been released pending notification of relatives.
